Preview
The Diamondbacks and Phillies will face off in their 2nd game of their 4 game series. With Eflin being scratched, the d-backs were able to get to lefty Matt Moore with ease yesterday. The Philly bats need to wake up soon or their chances of getting a wildcard spot will soon be zero. Arizona may have won yesterday but that is only their 17th road victory on the season.
The Philly bats must wake up and turn things around quick or they will continue to fall back in the wildcard race in quick fashion. Between the cold bats and struggling bullpen their chances are looking very slim at the moment. They have lost 4 straight to this Arizona team and could be going for a 5th if they don’t wake up.
Arizona is abysmal this year, especially on the road. They were able to get the job done yesterday by getting on the board early and then attacking the Philly bullpen. They have been bottom of the league against right handed pitching and combine that with their road record they will need to hope Aaron Nola forgets his A game at home.
Pitching Matchup
Phillies
Aaron Nola (7-7, 4.33 ERA) Aaron Nola takes the hill today for the Phillies. Nola has regressed a little this year compared to last year. He comes into this game sporting a 1.12 WHIP and 3.49 XFIP. This should be a juicy strikeout matchup as the Diamondbacks have close to a 25% strikeout rate against right handers. Nola has a 29.9% strikeout rate this year, if the Phillies can find the bats Nola should be able to mow down the Arizona hitters and pick up his 8th win of the season.
Diamondbacks
Taylor Widener (2-1, 4.34 ERA) Widener will be the one called upon to take the mound against the Phillies. He has thrown quite nicely in the month of August. The young right hander comes into this game with a 1.38 WHIP and a 5.72 XFIP. Sporting a 24% strikeout rate followed by a high 11.6% walk rate Widener still might be able to find success against a cold Phillies offense. The only thing that may hurt him today is the home run ball as he has allowed 12 HR’s in only 56 inning this year.
Prediction
We have two pitchers with good strikeout stuff heading into this game going against struggling offenses. If Widener can keep the walks down and keep the Phillies lefties in check he should find success. The Diamondbacks are not good on the road and follow that up with the fact that they struggle mightily against right handed pitching this game could have little offense today.
PICK: Phillies RL -1.5 (-111)
