Preview

The NFC East divisional matchups begin tonight with the Giants at FedExField to face the Washington Football Team.  Both teams are 0-1 beginning with home losses to start the season.  Daniel Jones was efficient completing 22 of 37 passes for 267 yards, one TD and no picks.  Washington lost Ryan Fitzpatrick early due to a hip injury.  His replacement Taylor Heinicke was 11 of 15 for 122 yards and one TD, but couldn't lead WFT to victory after their defense was gashed by sophomore Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen.  Washington won the division last season with all four teams finishing below .500. Now, with Dak back under center in Dallas, Rivera's team needs to get off to a good start if they're to repeat last year's feat.

Offensive matchup

Saquon Barkley is still working his way back from an ACL injury last season evidence by the fact that he was only on the field for 48% of the snaps and had only ten rushes averaging 2.6 yards per rush and one target in week 1.  The Giants were also without tight end Evan Engram due to injury.  Sterling Shepherd did go seven catches for 113 yards and one TD against the Broncos, but overall the Giants' offense couldn't get a rhythm going.

Washington began the season on the back of their running game once again.  Antonio Gibson had 108 yards with 90 of that coming on the ground from 20 attempts, but after him their next leading rusher was Heinicke who ran three times for 17 yards.  They were without Curtis Samuel and Terry McLaurin was shut out in the first half.  Logan Thomas has the team's only passing touchdown. With Fitzpatrick heading to the IR, Heinicke will take the starting role while Kyle Allen will become his backup.

Defensive matchup

The Giants defense held the Broncos to a scoreless first quarter but then found it hard to contain Teddy Bridgewater for the remainder of the game allowing the journeyman QB to complete 28 of 36 pass attempts.  Cornerback Logan Ryan led the team with eight tackles while Blake Martinez had six.

Washington's defense didn't start off as well as it ended last year.  Chase Young was kept quiet and they were unable to contain Justin Hebert down the stretch and only managing to sack him twice.  They did keep the game competitive by holding up well in the red zone, however, limiting the Chargers to only two TDs for the entire game and they managed to put some pressure on LAC's shoddy offensive line.

Prediction

The G men started exactly how they ended last season and are already still dealing with injuries to their offense.  Washington is also struggling to get their offense going and as efficient as Taylor Heinicke can be he won't be trusted to sling the ball too many times a game.  Neither of these offenses seems to be clicking right now and a short week is more of a hindrance than a help.  The over / under at 41 is too high.
