Preview

The Virginia Tech Hokies will host the Duke Blue Devils at Lane Stadium this weekend.

Duke jumped out to a 3-1 start, but they've run into a rock with ACC play, dropping each of their first five conference games.

Virginia Tech fell below .500 with a road loss to Boston College last weekend. The Hokies had a miserable game offensively when starting QB Braxton Burmeister went down on the first possession of the game, and ended up losing 17-3.

Offensive matchup
Duke (3-6)

Gunnar Holmberg hasn't been able to keep up with these newly high octane ACC offenses. He's been able to game manage, and it just hasn't been enough during conference play. Holmberg is up to 2,034 passing yards with seven touchdowns to six interceptions for the season.

Mataeo Durant has been the pulse of the Duke offense. They've struggled mightily through the air, but Durant has run for 80 or more yards in eight of nine games this season. He's ran for1,054 rushing yards with 11 total touchdowns on the season.

Jake Bobo has been the team's most consistent receiver. The senior wideout leads the team with 59 catches and 635 receiving yards. Jalon Calhoun presents a deep threat on the outside, and he's second on the team in catches (41) and yards (609).

Virginia Tech (4-5)

Braxton Burmeister is going to try to give it a go this weekend, while redshirt freshman Knox Kadum will get the call if the former Oregon transfer can't go. Kadum only went 7-16 in spot duty last weekend, and Burmeister has thrown for 1,495 passing yards with nine touchdowns to three interceptions.

Malachi Thomas and Raheem Blackshear have split the load this season. Blackshear leads the team with 425 rushing yards, but Thomas has really stepped up over the last three games, rushing for 328 yards during that span.

Wideout Tre Turner also missed last weekend's contest, and his status versus Duke remains in question. Turner had a career day in his last outing, catching seven passes for 187 receiving yards, including a 69-yard touchdown. Sophomore Tayvion Robinson has 367 receiving yards, and leads the team in catches with 35.

Prediction

Duke's bad run of ACC play likely won't end here. A see of orange should overwhelm the Blue Devils, just as it did their Tobacco Road rivals to open season. We also feel like Tech is strong enough at Lane to contain Duke's one dimensional offense, win the game of field position, and sustain a lead large enough to cover the number.

PICK: Virginia Tech -11.5
