Preview

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will travel into the mountains and take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers this Wednesday for a Sun Belt Conference battle. App. State had their three-game win streak snapped on the road last Tuesday, while Coastal picked up their sixth straight win on Thursday evening.

Coastal Carolina propelled into the top 15 of the AP Polls after thumping Arkansas State on the road. The Chancticleers jumped out to a massive 24-0 lead at halftime, and cruised to a 52-20 victory, covering their third straight lofty spread.

Appalachian State couldn't get anything going offensively last weekend on the road against UL-Lafayette. The Rajun-Cajuns jumped out to a 20-3 lead early, and the Mountaineers failed to recover, falling 41-13.

Offensive matchup
Coastal Carolina (6-0, 2-0)

Grayson McCall is having a Heisman-worthy campaign, and he added to it with another proficient performance last week. The redshirt sophomore went 18-23 for a season-high 365 passing yards with four touchdowns to no interceptions. This will be his toughest test yet, but he looks ready to thrive again here.

Reese White and Shermari Jones spearhead the Coastal run game. White leads the with 455 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, and he scored on a 64-yard dash against Arkansas State. Jones returned last week and ran for 113 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown score after missing two games.

Jaivon Heiligh continues to be a stud on the outside in his senior season. The veteran wideout has three 100-yard performances so far this season, and he leads the team in catches (29) and yards (513). Tight end Isaiah Likely is also coming off of career-day, as the senior pass catcher caught eight passes for 232 yards, including an eye-popping 99-yard score.

Appalachian State (4-2, 1-1)

Chase Brice had his roughest outing of the season in the Bayou. The former Duke QB went had a season low 15 completions, for 135 passing yards, and two interceptions. He may fare better at home this Wednesday, but that's no guarantee with Coastal coming to town.

The absence of star back Camerun Peoples (353 rush yards, 8 rush TDs) has stung the offense. Sophomore Nate Noel has been solid his place, leading the team with 551 rushing yards, but they've failed to reach 100 yards in both games Peoples has missed.

App State has a nice trio of pass catchers in Corey Sutton, Malik Williams, and Thomas Hennigan. Sutton leads the team with 34 catches and 492 receiving yards, after three straight 100-yard performances prior to last weekend. Hennigan is on pace to catch 40 passes for the fourth time in his career this season, and he's up to 25 receptions and 351 yards on the year.

Prediction

This matchup puts the Mountaineers in an upset spot, but the spread for the visitors could be the real gift here. Coastal Carolina looks even better than they did last season. Although this mid-week, road contest has the feel of a trap game, we won't overthink here. They've been dominant on both sides of the ball, and they should take care of business Wednesday.

PICK: Coastal Carolina 4.5
