Preview

The Phillies are in San Diego on Friday night for the first game of a three-game series vs the Padres.  The Phillies just were swept in Arizona against the Diamondbacks, and the Padres were swept in Colorado by the Rockies. Philly is on a four-game losing streak while San Diego is on a three-game losing streak of their own.

The Phillies look like they are cooling off a bit after taking the NL East lead for a little while. Their offense has been quiet as they haven't scored more than two runs in seven of their last nine games, averaging 2.33 runs per game in that stretch.

The Padres bats have been relatively quiet as of late after it was the strength of the team. In the last eight games, they are averaging 3.25 runs per game and it isn't helping them as they are about to fall out of the Wild Card.

Pitching matchup

Phillies

Matt Moore (2-3, 6.07 ERA) is coming off one of the best starts of his career last time out as he defeated the Cincinnati Reds and threw six no-hit innings allowing just two walks and eight strikeouts before being pulled. He has a 4.05 ERA in nine games (four starts) on the road this year. Moore has not faced the Padres in a handful of years so it's difficult to look at his numbers and draw a conclusion here. Don't expect him to shove two games in a row but don't expect a stinker either.

Padres

Blake Snell (6-4, 4.80 ERA) takes the mound for the Padres and looks like he is turning around his season. He's coming off a no-decision against the Arizona Diamondbacks where he allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings of work. The month of August has been doing well for Snell's numbers as in three starts, he is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA.  He has faced the Phillies once already this season and Philadelphia's and hitters went 2-for-12 (.167) with four walks and three strikeouts but did not allow a single run in that start.

Prediction

This run line is huge, with the Padres being a -213 favorite, but probably for good reason. These offenses have been struggling as of late but the starting pitching matchup is critical. Matt Moore is not as good as former AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, who seems to be getting comfortable finally in the National League. San Diego is definitely the better team in this game and I trust the Padres bullpen more so go with the run line here to get way better odds.

PICK: Padres -1.5 (-110)
