Preview

The Tennessee Volunteers will welcome the Bowling Green Falcons to kick off the 2021 season Tennessee defeated Bowling Green at Neyland Stadium in 2015, 59-30.

Bowling Green Falcons

Bowling Green finished at the bottom of the Mid American Conferense last year after going 0-5. Head coach Scot Loeffler will enter his third season in charge, and he's posted a 3-14 record so far.

Redshirt junior Matt McDonald started five games last season, and didn't yield the best results. He only threw for 712 yards with one touchdown to six interceptions.

Terion Stewart led the team in rushing as a freshman with 295 yards and four scores in the final three games of the season. He should be the focal point of the Falcon offense. Bowling Green lost their three leading receivers from last year, leaving Javonte Kinsey as the only returning player with more than one reception.

Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee never really got going last season.. The Volunteers finished fifth in the SEC East with a 3-7 record in 2020. Josh Heupel will lead the Vols into a new regime this season. Heupel was successful in his first head coaching role at UCF, and posted a 27-6 record in three years.

Heupel will have three options to play at quarterback, and depending on the game flow, we may see all three. Joe Milton III has been rumoured to have won the starting job after throwing for 1077 passing yards at Michigan in last season. Hendon Hooker, a transfer from nearby Virginia Tech, brings a dual-threat skill set to the table.

Ty Chandler and Eric Gray combined for over 1,100 rushing yards last season, but both are no longer with the program, leaving a hole in the backfield. Jabari Small could be in for the bulk of the workload after rushing for 117 yards on 26 carries last season. Velus Jones Jr. should see more of a role this season with Josh Palmer gone. The speedy wideout only caught 22 passes for 280 receiving yards during his first season over from Southern Cal.

Prediction

This is good spot for Josh Heupel and Tennessee to remind the nation and bring a new era in. It's been a tough four years for Rocky Top, but brighter days do lie ahead. It starts here with a big win at Neyland to open the season. Bowling Green will enter inexperienced and the sea of orange could make them grow overwhelmed quick. There isn't much value in the moneylines, so trust Tennessee to cover the blowout spread.
