Preview

The Creighton Blue Jays and the Nebraska Cornhuskers will meet for their annual in-state meeting.

The Blue Jays have opened their 2021-22 season with a pair of home wins, and they now look ready to take on their first real test.

The Cornhuskers couldn't avoid disaster in their season opener, but they rebounded with a respectable non-conference win over Sam Houston State. The Cornhuskers trailed by five at halftime, but a strong second half would lead to a 74-65 victory.

Creighton (2-0)

Alex O'Connell is finally being given the green light and he's thriving early. The former Duke guard exploded for 20 points in the opener, and he is going to be the catalyst of this Creighton team that has a lot of pieces to replace.

He's joined up front by newcomer Ryan Hawkins, whose posted a pair of double-doubles already this season, averaging 11 ppg and 10.5 rpg.

Freshmen Ryan Nembhard and Arthur Kaluma round out a solid lineup, with the former averaging a well-rounded 13 ppg, 4 rpg and 6 apg.

Nebraska (1-1)

Freshman Bryce McGowens might just be the real deal. The 6'7 guard exploded for 29 points in the comeback victory, just after scoring 25 points in his debut. He could be the reason Nebraska breaks this eight-game losing streak to Creighton.

Alonzo Verge Jr. has come over from Arizona State and given the Cornhuskers the best pair of guards they've seen in a while. The senior guard put up an impressive 26/13/5 in the opener against Western Illinois.

Veterans Trey McGowens and Derrick Walker both return to the starting lineup after transferring in from Tennessee and PItt respectively last season. Trey, the elder McGowens, is four on the team with 8.5 ppg.

Prediction

Creighton lost so much from last year's team, while Nebraska enters with their best group of guys in years. Head coach Fred Hoiberg has a chance to deliver in year three with a postseason bid, and a notable rivalry win here would really help their case come March. The McGowens/Verge Jr. tandem could overwhelm an inexperienced Creighton team on the road, and we love their chances at home here.

PICK: Nebraska -3.5 (-110)
