Preview

The Boston Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners will play game two of their three-game set this evening from Safeco Field. Seattle survived a scared after taking a 5-2 lead in the seventh, and picked up the victory last night.

The Red Sox have only won two of their last eight games, and they now sit a game below the Yankees for the final AL Wild Card spot. They got homers from Zander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers last evening, but they couldn't complete the comeback. If Boston wants to make the playoffs, a sense of urgency has to kick in soon. The Jays' resurgence has been overwhelming, and if they don't break this funk they could find themselves on the outside looking in by a small margin.

The Mariners ironic sit a game behind Boston in the AL Wild Card picture so this series is huge. A three-run homer from Mitch Haniger have the Mariners their seventh win in eleven games this month. They've been great at Safeco this season, and although they struggle at times behind the plate, they remain one of the harder teams to bet against at home.

Pitching matchup

Red Sox

Nathan Eovaldi (10-8, 3.57 ERA) will the take the mound for Boston. The Red Sox' ace has been locked in since a rough start in Toronto last month. He's thrown seven of more strikeouts in eight of his last eleven starts, but he's been a victim of run support and failed to record a win since August 11th. It's been a month and Eovo may just be due one this evening.

Mariners

Tyler Anderson (6-9, 4.20 ERA) will get the call for Seattle. He's been decent in eight starts since coming over from Pittsburgh at the deadline. He was roughed up in his last outing in Houston, but the Astros aren't slouches. In his last start at Safeco, he went seven innings and struck out six en route to a victory.

Prediction

This AL Wild Card is heated and highly contested. All four teams have a shot, and the games are starting to matter more by the day. The Mariners have been impressive at home, and the Red Sox are in the midst of a funk. Eovaldi's presence on the mound can't be overlooked here though. Boston needs a win, and this would be the arm to deliver. Seattle's lineup isn't fearsome, and if the Boston bats can get things going again, with solid pitching they could pick up the win tonite. Take the Red Sox run line tonight.

PICK: Boston Red Sox -1.5 (+120)
