Preview

The Saints will travel west to Seattle for a Monday Night primetime NFC matchup against the Seahawks.  They're coming off of their bye week after a convincing 33-22 win over the Football Team in Week 5 and sit second to the Bucs' in the South division.  Jameis Winston had one of his best games as a Saints just before the break and will be looking to continue his form.

The Seahawks lost narrowly to the Steelers last week 23-20 after a late lost fumble from backup Geno Smith who will be back under center with Russell Wilson still sidelined for multiple weeks.  Seattle sits last in the West and is well behind the Cardinals and Rams in the race for a playoff spot.  They'll need this win at home to keep up face in the tough NFC.

September 2019 was the last time the Saints and Seahawks matched up.  The Saints were without Drew Brees because of an injury but managed to pull off the 33-27 win thanks to Teddy Bridgewater, even with Russell Wilson throwing for 406 yards.

Offensive matchup

New Orleans' offense put up 33 points against Washington in Week 5.  It was their first 30+ game since the opening week demolishing of the Packers.  Jameis Winston is 30th in the league in yards (892).  However, his ten TDs put him joint-tenth overall and he's managed to keep the turnovers at a minimum throwing only three picks for the season.  Deonte Harris leads the team with 296 receiving yards for a pair of scores and Marquez Callaway has 222 yards for 3 TDs.  Alvin Kamara is the team's leading offensive weapon.  He leads the team with four TDs from 368 yards (11th in the league) and 113 receiving yards.  The biggest news for the Saints is that their number one receiver Michael Thomas is still unavailable.  Thomas was initially expected to return for Week 7 after missing six weeks through injury.  This is in addition to the fact that Deonte Harris is also out for this week.

The Seahawks are still struggling with injuries offensively.  Alex Collins had a big game rushing against the Steelers in Week 6 with 101 yards but could miss the Saints matchup due to a groin injury.  Chris Carson was also placed on IR last week. Rashad Penny has been activated off of IR and could be the leading back for Week 7 if Collins isn't medically cleared to go.  Geno Smith went 23 of 32 last week for 209 yards and a passing TD.  He also was stripped late in the game and lost the ball which set up Chris Boswell to kick the winning FG.  Smith will need to get DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett more involved than they were in Week 6 to stand any chance against the Saints.

Defensive matchup

Going into Week 7 the Saints have given up 91 points; the least in the NFL due in part to the fact that they've played a game less than some of the other great defenses.  They're also a top-five defense in opponent yards.  Marshon Lattimore's nine passes defended is joint-second in the league.  Demario Davis leads the team with 38 total tackles and Malcolm Jenkins has 35.  The Saints are healthy on defense so everyone is expected to be ready.

The Seahawks' defense continues to struggle to contain opposing offenses, especially through the air.  They remain 32nd in the league in total yards given up this season.  Ironically, Bobby Wagner has had an outstanding 2021.  His 72 tackles rank second in the league.  Wagner has been the team's only standout defensively.  Safety Jamal Adams has been under scrutiny for his lack of plays made this season.

Prediction

The Saints will be well-rested and prepared for the trip out west.  Even with the injuries on offense, they should have enough firepower for the Seattle defense.  Pete Carroll and the Seahawks still can't get themselves together defensively and Geno Smith is going to have another tough defensive matchup.  Take the Saints to win on the road.
