Preview

The Baltimore Orioles are in Toronto for their first of a three-game divisional series against the Blue Jays to close out August.  Baltimore sits at the foot of the AL East and the league and has now been officially eliminated from playoff contention following an August that saw them lose seven of their eight series and swept in six of them.  In total, the Orioles registered three wins this month.  Toronto is in 4th in the division with a 68-61 record in arguably the toughest division in baseball.  The Blue Jays are still in the hunt for a wild card spot and this seems like the perfect opportunity to gain some ground on their other division rivals - Yankees and Red Sox - who currently occupy the wild card spots.  Toronto had an impressive start to the month but has since tailed off.  They're on a two-game winning streak after beating Detroit 2-1 in their last series.

Pitching matchup

Orioles

Chris Ellis (1-0, 3.86 ERA) With nothing to lose or gain, Chris Ellis is in line to draw his second start of the season and his career for the Orioles.  Ellis debuted in the majors in 2019 and has an ERA of 3.38 in his total of four careers games so far.  This season his ERA is 3.86 and has pitched seven innings in two games in the last month.  In those appearances, he recorded ten strikeouts, with a single walk and gave up ten hits with three ERs.

Blue Jays

Robbie Ray (9-5, 2.72 ERA) Ninth-year pitcher Robbie Ray will be first to the mound for Toronto, sporting a career-best 2.72 ERA in the 2021 season.  He's been consistent for the Blue Jay, especially in the last month. In his five games in August, he allowed only 6 ERs off 23 hits and 42 batters struck out in 34 innings pitched.  Ray will try to finish the month as consistently as he started against the worst team in the league.

Prediction

There's not too much room for optimism in Baltimore's case. The Orioles are 15-33 against left-handed pitchers.  Toronto will be too fired up at the prospect of closing the gap in the wild card race. Take the Toronto money line for tonight's matchup.
