Preview
The Boston Red Sox will travel to take on the Cleveland Indians (soon to be Guardians) for a 3 game series. This will be the first time these teams face each other this season.
Boston comes into this game after going 2-1 against the Twins in their 3 game series. During that series they put up a total of 29 runs, an impressive number. In that same series they also allowed a total of 17 runs, an unimpressive number. They are looking to turn things around after a poor start after the All-Star break as they look to hold on to the second spot in the AL wildcard.
The Indians come into this game after going 2-1 in their series against the lowly Texas Rangers. In this series the Indians were able to muster up 20 total runs while allowing 15 runs. They are 8 games back in the wildcard and pretty much have no chance to make the playoffs. Despite that, look for them to come out and still perform as they still have Jose Ramirez and Franmil Reyes leading the way.
Pitching Matchup
Red Sox
Eduardo Rodriguez (9-7, 5.19 ERA) will be taking the mound for the Red Sox today in Cleveland. He comes into this game with a 1.40 WHIP, 3.67 XFIP, and .359 BABIP, showing just how unlucky he has been this year. The Indians have been mediocre this year against lefties and E-Rods 28.1% strikeout rate should help continue that trend. He has had some problems with same handed hitters this year allowing both decent power and contact numbers shown by his .250 ISO and .344 wOBA in the split. The Indians will likely roll out a right handed heavy lineup and that could work in Rodriguez’s favor as he has handled right handed bets well this season.
Indians
Logan Allen (1-5, 9.13 ERA) was recalled and will be starting today for the injured Triston Mckenzie. Allen comes into this game allowing a crazy amount of hard contact evidenced by the 9 home runs in only 22.2 innings this year. The lefty will have his hands full when the Red Sox come to town. He sports a 6.01 XFIP and 1.81 WHIP during his time with the big league club this year. Allen doesn’t strike doesn’t strike many hitters out and he has a high walk rate. He’s thrown between 4-5 innings in his starts in the minors so if finds some success today he could go deeper into this game. This will be is first appearance with the Indians since the beginning of July.
Prediction
Logan Allen has been abysmal this year having allowed 3 home runs in 2 of his starts. The Red Sox feast on lefties and look for that trend to continue here. The Indian expected lineup has a .133 ISO, .285 wOBA, and 23.9% strikeout rate against south paws this year. Although Boston has struggled since the all star break I fully expect them to get to Allen early and cruise to victory.
