Preview

With only one win between these two teams, the Dolphins and the Jaguars face off in the season's second game from London.  The 1-4 Dolphins were hammered 45-17 in Week 5 by the Buccaneers while the Jags suffered their 3rd home loss of the season to division rivals Tennesse by a 37-19 scoreline.  The last time these teams met was in Jacksonville, Florida in Week 3 of the 2020 season.  Miami won the game 31-13 and both teams had different signal callers under center as compared with this season.  Miami sits 3rd in the AFC East one game off of the Patriots and three behind the Bills.  The Jags are only one of two winless teams remaining in the league but the only winless AFC team.  They sit at the bottom of the NFL as a result of having a worse point differential than Detroit.  This is a matchup of two of the worst team in the league so both franchises will be motivated to go for the win.  The Dolphins are trying to keep pace in their division while Jacksonville is just trying to avoid staring down the barrel of a winless season for the first time in franchise history.

Offensive matchup

The Dolphins have the second-worst offense in the league having accumulated only 1,309 total yards on the season.  They're averaging only 15.8 points a game - which ranks 31st - and were shut out once this season by the Bills.  Second-year QB Tua Tagovailoa is off of IR and is eligible to play this weekend, which is good news since Jacoby Brissett is dealing with a hamstring injury that saw him limited in midweek practice.  Leading wide receiver DeVante Parker missed last week's matchup against the Bucs and was questionable in practice during the week.  The Fins already have wide receiver duo Allen Hurns and Will Fuller on IR and former Bears tight end Adam Shaheen is dealing with a knee injury.  The good news is that their next best wide options in rookie Jaylen Waddle and leading tight end Mike Gesicki are both available.  In addition, their leading rusher Myles Gaskin finally had a breakout game against the Bucs although his contribution was mainly through the air.  He had 5 carries for 25 yards and 10 catches for 74 aerial yards with 2 receiving TD.

The Jags offense ranks 27th in the NFL.  The 2021 number one draft pick Trevor Lawrence has completed 104 of 175 pass attempts for a 59.4 completion percentage and a 71.3 passer rating.  Laviska Shenault's 252 yards leads the team but doesn't even crack the top 50 in receiving yards this season.  Marvin Jones has 243 yards of his own and new recruit Dan Arnold has already racked up93 yards in two games for Jacksonville.  Their most effective offensive player has once again been James Robinson who is the 4th leading rusher in the league with 387 yards.  He's also added 88 receiving yards off 14 catches.

Defensive matchup

Both teams have defenses ranking in the bottom 5 in the league in yards allowed and points allowed.

Miami is averaging 468 yards allowed to opponents in the last 3 games, the most in the NFL.  They're also dealing with major injuries to the defense.  Both corners Byron Jones and Xavien Howard are questionable are dealing with achilles and shoulder issues, respectively.  Linebacker Jerome Taylor had a game-high 7 tackles against the Bucs and leads Miami with 24 total tackles on the season.

The Jags' leading tackler Myles Jack is still nursing a back injury and is set to miss the Week 6 matchup.  Jack is the Jaguars' leading tackler with 36 total and is closely followed by Damien Wilson with 32 and Andrew Wingard with 31.  The loss last week marked the 3rd time for the season that Jacksonville gave up over 30 points in a game this season.

Prediction

The Jags last played in London in 2019 and were only able to score a field goal in 4 quarters.  The Dolphins played back in 2017 and were shut out.  Neither of these teams has a good offense or a consistent defense.  With these offenses being among the worst in the and factoring in the overseas trip to London, the over / under at 47.5 does seem high.

PICK: Under (47.5)
