Preview

Jake Paul looks to continue his successful foray into boxing, as he takes on his biggest test in former UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley. Thus far, Paul has run through his competition in short order. In three fights, Paul has finished youtuber Ali Eson Gib, former nba player Nate Robinson and retired mixed martial artist Ben Askren. Meanwhile, Tyron Woodley makes his boxing debut. Not without experience however, as the former Champion built up a respectable 19-7-1 record in mixed martial arts. Although of late, Woodley has struggled. He has lost four straight fights, with his last coming via a stoppage in the opening round. At 39 years old, it remains to be seen how much left in the tank Woodley has.

Prediction

Jake Paul has done a great job in marketing himself, generating buzz and picking the right opponents to continue to catapult his rise in boxing. Although, people have complained about Paul choosing his opponents. Which to me is strange. If you look at any boxer’s record, it’s padded from the beginning of their career with low level talent. It’s no different than in other sports, where you start in the minors or on the bench. You have to build yourself up before you are ready to take on challenges. In my opinion, a fourth fight against an active mixed martial artist and former Welterweight Champion in Tyron Woodley is not taking the easy road. Woodley may be new to fighting in a boxing ring, but he’s certainly not new to fighting. Woodley has been an active mixed martial artist since 2009. With twelve years of experience, Woodley is not your average boxing debutant.

In terms of each’s strength in this fight, Paul has demonstrated that he has power. His right hand has finished all three opponents. In each fight, Paul has looked from a technique point, better each time. He’s got speed, which could surprise Woodley. Youth, as Paul is fifteen years younger and with a lot less mileage on him. Also, Paul is coming into this fight with momentum and confidence, which alone is mentally an advantage. Meanwhile, Woodley has power himself. Of Woodley’s nineteen MMA victories, he has knocked seven opponents out. Woodley’s athleticism is excellent, as his ability to explode has caught several opponents off guard. Lastly, Woodley’s experience is huge. He’s been fighting for twelve years, has twenty-seven professional MMA fights, countless twenty-five minute fights, has been a champion and fought the best. A track record that truly speaks for itself.

As for a prediction, I’m going with Tyron Woodley. The ‘Chosen One' is definitely no longer in his prime, as evident by the four fight losing streak he comes into this bout with. However, Woodley has been crafting his striking for twelve years. He went from mainly a wrestler to a devastating knockout artist. Of late though and I’ll admit, Woodley doesn’t carry that same fear when you entered the octagon with him. His hesitancy to throw his hands has been his biggest knock, which in his last fight, he finally did. Although he ultimately lost, perhaps the old Woodley had returned. I’m hoping for such because if Woodley fights like he did in the three fights before his last, Paul is going to feast on him. The last thing I’ll say and it’s part of the reason I side with Woodley, his cardio and experience in twenty-five minute fights are huge factors in this bout. Paul has yet to see a round three. It’s unknown what his cardio is like the deeper the fight goes, whereas Woodley has fought for twenty-five minutes five times since 2016. Throw in the fact that each round is three minutes, and not five like Woodley is used to, and I expect a fresher ‘T-Wood’ every round. So with all that said, I predict that Woodley wins this fight via late TKO.
