Preview

The St. Louis Cardinals will look to prevent a sweep when they wrap their three-game set up with the Milwaukee Brewers this Friday night. After heroics from Avisail Garcia in the ninth inning, Milwaukee would go onto to win in extras, 6-4.

The Cardinals won eight of their previous nine games coming into this series with Milwaukee, but these last two defeats have been timely. With each loss, the Cards postseason aspirations The Cardinals won eight of their previous nine games coming into this series with Milwaukee, but these last two defeats have been timely. With each loss, the Cards postseason aspirations fall further and further away. The Giants have won the first two games and are looking for a sweep here.

The Brewers have are on a tear themselves, winning eight of their last nine, and looking to secure their second sweep in a week. Their pitching has been top tier all season, and their bats are starting to wake up at the right time.

Pitching Matchup

Brewers

Brandon Woodruff (7-6, 2.18 ERA) will get the ball for the Brew Crew here. He hasn't recorded a win since June, but he's been a victim of a lack run support and he's having the best season of his career. Woodruff ranks third in the NL in ERA, just decimals behind Cy Young hopeful and teammate Corbin Burnes. He's given up one run of less in seven of his last nine starts, and he's tossed eight strikeouts or more in three of his last five. Woodruff dominated St. Louis in his last start against them, tossing ten strikeouts over eight innings of work.

Cardinals

Jon Lester (4-6, 5.32 ERA) will make his third start from the Cards after being added at the deadline. The postseason veteran picked up his fourth win of the season on the road against the Royals, only giving up one run in six innings of work. Lester was blown up in his first pair of home appearances at Busch, but he'll have to turn back the clock and prevent a sweep tonight.

Prediction

The Cardinals really need this game, but history isn't on their side. Woodruff has won his last three starts against them, including a stellar performance in June, and a late-season, ten strikeout performance last year. The Cards have a shot, but all the Brewers have to do is provide run support for Woodruff, and they secure this sweep. Back the Brewers on the road.  The moneyline is a bit too steep so we're going with the run line.  The Brewers have covered in eight of their last ten games.
