Preview

Today we have the Tigers taking on the White Sox. This is the third game in their four game series, the Tigers took the first two games by scores of 4-3 and 5-3.  The Tigers enter this game with no shot of making the postseason.  They suprised alot of people this year and they will look to close out the season on a high note and continue this recent run they've been on.  The White Sox enter this game firmly in first place in the AL Central as they sit 10.5 games ahead of Cleveland.  They have gone 4-6 in their last 10 games and could possibly be on cruise control until the postseason begins.  They'll need to wake up a bit and get something going now so they don't go into the playoffs in their current form.

Pitching matchup

White Sox

Reynaldo Lopez (3-3, 3.00 ERA) will be on the mound for the White Sox when they take on the Rays.  Lopez enters this game with a 0.94 WHIP and 3.93 XFIP.  This season he carries a nice 26.1% strikeout rate along with a 6.5% walk rate. In his limited innings this season he has thrown 48 innnings, allowing 16 earned runs, while striking out 47 hitters.  Lopez was working out of the bullpen at the beginning of the season but has been getting starts for the past couple months now and is starting to get stretched out a bit. He has been able to go 4-5 innings in his last couple starts and I expect more of the same in this one depending how effiecient he is.  Lopez has the strikeout stuff to be succesful in this matchup, though he has allowed some hard contact to both sides of the plate.  He benefits from facing a Tigers team that strikes out at a high clip against right handed pitching, though they have been on a nice little run of late.

Tigers

Casey Mize (7-8, 3.64 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Tigers when they host the White Sox. Mize enters this game with a 1.14 WHIP and 4.55 XFIP.  This season he carries a 19.4% strikeout rate along with a 7.3% walk rate. The young right handed hurler for the Tigers has been good this year, though the Tigers brass seems to be limiting his innings down the final stretch of the season.  He hasn't gone more than 3 innings in the month of September as they try to keep their young prospect healthy.  Mize has handled right handed hitters very well this season limiting hard contact, left handed hitters are a different story as he has been hit extremely hard and has given up premium contact in the split. He will look to contain this loaded White Sox lineup until he hands the ball off to the bullpen.

Prediction

I'll be targeting the White Sox in this one as I expect them to turn things around today as they should see the Tigers bullpen for the bulk of this game. Lopez has been good and this White Sox bullpen has some quality arms in it.  Go with the better pitching and better bats in this matchup.
