Preview
The Tigers travel to St. Louis for the first game of a back-to-back against the Cardinals. Detroit took their last series 2-1, their only two wins in their last 7 games. The Cardinals are coming off of a 2-1 series loss but won the last game of that series keeping their opponents off the board.
Pitching matchup
Tigers
Casey Mize (6-6, 3.69 ERA) Casey Mize will take the mound for the Tigers. The second-year pitcher has a WHIP of 1.17 an ERA of 3.69 in 2021, bettering his rookie season ERA of 6.99 which came over 7 games in 2020. In the last 14 days, Mize has surrendered six runs from nine hits to go along with five walks and eight strikeouts. This will be his first game against the Cardinals this season
Cardinals
Jack Flaherty (9-1, 2.68 ERA) Jack Flaherty will start on the mound for the Cardinals. Flaherty boasts a 0.95 WHIP and 2.68 ERA in 2021. In his rookie season in 2017, he had an ERA of 6.33, a 3.44 ERA in 2018, a 2.75 ERA in 2019, and a 4.91 ERA in 2020. In the last two weeks, Flaherty has given up only six hits for two runs with a single walk and and impressive 13 strikeouts. This will be his first meeting with the Tigers this season, but his only loss on record comes against an AL Central opponent.
Prediction
The Tigers bats have been inconsistent being shut out twice in their last seven games and are averaging 3.14 runs per game mainly in part to an unusual 13-10 loss. The Cardinals batting has been kept modest in their last two series but still has the better potential to put runs on the board. If Flaherty can keep up his performance from the last game it should be enough to keep the Tigers batting at bay and enough to see St. Louis through.
PICK: Cardinals -1.5 (-110)
