Preview

The Seattle Mariners are in Oakland playing the Athletics in the second game of the short two game series Tuesday afternoon.  The Mariners took the first game 5-3, with a 3 run 9th inning.

The Mariners won the last searies against the As, taking 3 of 4 in late July, and Oakland won the first series in late May / early June, winning 2 of 3.

The Mariners have now won 5 of 7, but have only managed to score 3.4 runs in those games.  Their pitching has been solid, leading them to a 68-58 record and firmly in the Wild Card hunt.

The As are 2 games ahead of the Mariners in the Wild Card race.  They've now dropped 3 straight and lost 7 of 9.  In that 9 game run they've only scored 2.9 runs per game.

Pitching matchup

Mariners

Chris Flexen (10-5, 3.65 ERA) takes the mound for the Mariners.  He’s pitched much better this season in 23 starts after a 7.88 ERA 2017, 12.79 ERA 2018 and 6.59 ERA 2019.  He’s pitched well in August in 4 starts, going a combined 24.2 innings, giving up 8 earned runs on 25 hits and 5 walks, striking out 21 in those innings.  He’s faced the Athletics twice this season.  His first outing was not good – he went 6.0 innings and gave up 5 earned runs on 7 hits and 1 walk.  His second outing was better, going 5.1 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits and 2 walks.  As batters have gone 13 for 46 (.283 AVG) against Flexen, with 1 home run and 3 walks, striking out 3 times.

Athletics

Cole Irvin (9-11, 3.57 ERA) will pitch for the As.  He too has pitched much better in his 24 starts this year after a disastrous 2020 (17.18 ERA in 3 appearances) and a 5.83 ERA 2019.  Like Flexen, his August has been improved, with 3 starts resulting in a combined 18.0 innings, with 8 earned runs on 19 hits, 7 walks and 7 strikeouts.  He’s faced the Mariners twice this season and not done well, giving up 4 earned runs in each game, the first going 4.2 innings with 10 hits and 1 walk, and the second going 4.0 innings with 5 hits and 1 walk.  Mariners batters have gone 14 for 33 against Irvin (.424 AVG), with 2 walks and no home runs.

Prediction

Irvin has done poorly against the Mariners, going a combined 8.2 innings giving up 8 earned runs this season, and Mariners batters are hitting .424 against him.  We’re surprised to see the Mariners as dogs here, and the line didn't move even after last night's win.  Take the dogs as they have a great shot to sweep the mini-series.
