Preview

Tonight the Tampa Bay Rays travel to Toronto to take on a red hot Blue Jays team.  Toronto enters this game going 9-1 in their last 10 games and are on an absolute tear recently.  They have managed to get themselves into an AL wildcard spot where they sit 1 game ahead of the Yankees. They'll look to continue this momentum and try to pull away with one of those wildcard spots.  The Rays enter this game firmly in first place in the AL East,  9 games ahead of the Blue Jays and Red Sox. They dropped 2 games out of 3 against the lowly Tigers in their weekend series and will try to bounce back against a red hot Blue Jays squad.

Pitching matchup

Rays

Ryan Yarbrough (8-4, 4.90 ERA) (Collin McHugh will be the opener) will be on the mound for the Rays for long relief when they travel to Toronto to take on the Blue Jays.  He enters this one with a 1.23 WHIP and 4.80 XFIP.  This season Yarbrough carries a low 18.4% strikeout rate paired with a 4.4% walk rate.  Yarbrough as been average this year and has relied on his defense when he takes the mound.  In his last 2 starts against this Blue Jays team this year he went 10 innings, striking out 9 hitters, while allowing a total of 3 earned runs.  The Blue Jays boast a projected lineup that has a .219 ISO, .367wOBA, and a low 17.4% strikeout rate against left handed hurlers this year. Although Yarbrough has had some succes against this Blue Jays team he will have his work cut out for him tonight against a red hot team and one of the best offenses in baseball.

Blue Jays

Alek Manoah (5-2, 3.71 ERA) will take the mound when the visiting Rays come to town.  He comes into this game with a 1.12 WHIP and 4.50 XFIP. This season the young right handed boasts a 24.5% strikeout rate paired with a high 9.4% walk rate.  Manoah has been great in his rookie season since being called up.  In his last two starts against this Rays team he has gone 10.2 innnings, striking out 19 hitters, and alowing a total of 2 earned runs.  The Rays projected lineup boasts a .217 ISO, .335 wOBA, and a high 26.4% strikeout rate against right handed pitching this season.  Manoah has been good and he has had succes in this matchup before, but he has struggled with some power and contact against left handed hitters.  He will need to keep the lefites in check, and the walks down if he wants to have success against the division leading Rays.

Prediction

Both lineups for these teams are in great spots according to the numbers. They project well against the handedness of each pitcher.  On another note though, both pichers have had some decent success against each other when they've faced off against each team's respected lineups.  Toronto is just hitting the ball so good recently, and although their bullpen is not as strong as Tampa's I think they still pull this off and pick up another win.
